Need rock? Go to the beach

I just moved back to hawaii after a 15 year break and wanted to get my tank going again. So i go into my lfs and ask about sand and base rock. They tell me that it is cheaper to go down to the beach myself and pick up my own sand and rock and let it rinse in freshwater for 24 hours prior to putting it in my tank. How does this sound to you guys out there? I thought by going to the beach there is no way to know what is in your sand or on your rocks. So, is this bad advice or is hawaii cleaner than other parts of the world?

I doubt it is legal, might want to check first. Otherwise I have used rock and substrate from the ocean, it's where all LFS get it.

you have a beach in colorado?
there are a number of good resources for base rock, i get mine for about $1.30 a pound, it actually comes shipped to your door from hawaii. email me for a link if you are interested. it is shipped dry, so the weight you buy is the weight you get. i think it comes in 50 pound increments, or 30 pound boxes if you want smaller rubble and frag mounting pieces.

why don't my eyes work any more? i must have too much salt creep on the glasses, time to clean em off.
now that i have taken time to actually read the post all the way through however, you might try to find this outfit and get baserock from them if wild collecting is illegal. i would guess walk-in prices would be maybe 50 cents a pound as most of the cost of getting it here to the mainland is in the shipping.

The people that Krux is talking about I have purchased 100lbs off them and the rock is great, you more then likely will get it real cheap if you pick it up in Hawaii I would highly recommend them

Krux, I have emailed you several times and keep getting them back. Looks like Comcast does not like you folks out there in Portland. Seems they have the whole area on a banned list. Anyway, hows about emailing me the link too? Thanks Mike
