I have a small 26 gallon bow front All Glass Aquarium marine tank that I am using as a starter system in expectation of growing my tank size as experience comes. There are dozens that claim to be a good unit but I would appreciate some input from members that have "been there and done that". I am not worried about the skimmer being limited in size as I will keep it with this tank for a quarantine unit or the like in the future. I already purchased one and found out the hard way that it wasn't going to work well for this tank. I am thinking hang on units but will listen to any suggestions. Thank-you in advance for any and all help!

Personally for smaller tanks I prefer the Aqua c Remora hang on skimmers. They work wonderfully and I have never had an issue with them. They are fairly expensive however at around $165. You might try shopping around or seeing if anyone has one they might be getting rid of either here or craigslist, ebay, etc. I used one on my 29 gallon reef and have since moved it to a 50 gallon FOWLR in favor of a cheaper skimmer. Mostly because it was removing too much from the system and I was getting hardly any dark skimmate at all. I also run a refugium on my 29 gallon and I don't feed much so it was probably to be expected that It would overwork my tank. It is doing fantastic on my 50 gallon, although I only have a few green chromis in there right now. Ive always said that you need to purchase the absolute best skimmer that you can afford. Same for lighting if a reef tank. These things are 2 things that you shouldn't skimp on or try to make do with. They are extremely important in the success of the system. That's not to say you can't find a used one for a great price and have it work wonderfully. The great thing about this hobby is (this sounds mean lol but its great for us who stick with it) that alot of people don't find success and give up. When they do its difficult to get rid of equipment that many people aren't interested in so they sell it for extremely reduced prices. Ive found brand new skimmers never used for less then $50 on craigslist and im sure if you spend enough time looking you'll find something you can't pass up.

Well I've only used three HOB skimmers. First one I ever used was a red sea prizm. That was ok for FO tank and a tank with mushrooms and zoas. Second was the Remora C. Good skimmer, i had my issues with the pump and didn't really seem to pull that much gunk. Third one was Reef Octopus BH 100F. This was by far the BEST skimmer out of the three. I loved this one because was no power head in the tank! NO micro bubbles! It pulled A LOT of gunk out too. Pretty much any of the Reef Octopus HOB skimmers that do not have the pump in the tank are great. The only complaint i have seen is from the Reef Octopus BH 1000 and 2000 skimmers might let a bit of micro bubbles in. But I've seen these skimmers on two separate tanks and did not see any micro bubbles. Right now I'm using a Reef Octopus NWB skimmer. It is also amazing! I will never switch to another brand... Unless coral view messes them up!
