Ok so I just started up my 125 gallon tank. I have tested the water and everything is great except the nitrates. They are around 20. So I bought a clownfish and he is getting used to his new home! :) was just curious as when I should feed him? I bought him New Life Spectrum pebbles. Thanks for any advise you can give me! :)

I'd start feeding him the next day. Fish has to eat to stay healthy. Feeding one clown in a 125 shouldn't do much of anything to your nitrates spiking that high even in a new tank if your at the end of the cycle.

Ok ty very much!
but was just curious if I water change my tank 10 percent each weak will the nitrates eventually go down??? Even in the past I have had so much trouble with nitrates! I could never actually get them down to 0.

I had nitrates problems too, tried everything (de-nitrate gravel, solutions, water changes) but nothing. Then I read about deep sand beds and refugiums. I added 3+ inches of sand and a HOB refugium. And
the problem is now gone. My nitrates are always cero.

How much LR and LS do you have? What type of filtration?
You may need more biological filtration or may be still cycling.

Well I do have a sump and it I have a ton of live sand. Here are some pics of the tank and sump. My light fixture is crap right now but my new one is on its way. I have a 5 inches of sand in my tank. and another question. I put the pebbles in for my clown and he always seems just to find one? then the rest just either goes to the sand bed or get sucked up through the sump? What should I do about that???

Love the rock formation. Did you do that yourself. Nice!
I am not really into feeding pellets or any other dry food. I prefer only frozen food. It is hard to tell what is in that dry stuff. But it is everyone's own preference. I just prefer to feed them what they might eat in the wild. Frozen mysis, brine, or squid. I like the frozen variety pack as well. Your fish will enjoy variety. I alternate it with my homemade food.

Yes I did do that my self I am going to make it look more like a cave when I buy more Live Rock. Ok well Idk the guy at the fish store told me that is what they were feeding the fish they had so I just bought it. I will probably get more fish food tomorrow. Ty for the tips! :) Any other suggestions are very much welcome please I would love to know ALOT more!

My water parameters are perfect except for Nitrates. I recently tried a Nitrate remover product called Algone and it works pretty good. It's like a large teabag that you place in your filter. It's supposed to be "chemical free and all natural". Check it out at www.Algone.com. I, like most, probably overfeed so I clean my filter more frequently and use Algone and the nitrates are in check.

IDK about that ALGONE stuff, just because most ppl here try to encourage ppl to not add things like that unless neccessary. And besides that, once you take the teabag out, then the trates will likely go back up.
20 trates isn't that high I don't think. Maybe you want to add a refugium like cahuama suggested. You don't even need a HOB though cause you got a sump. Just add some Chaeto, pods and lights, and you should have 0 trates.
IDK if you have any filters, but if you do, maybe you sould clean them out.
As for the feeding, I agree you should feed frozen. I feed brine w/ spirulina (Brine is not the best food though), Mysis, and marine cuisise. Just take a very small chunk since you only have 1 fish, put it in a cup w/ a littl ebit of you tank water, and mix it up a bit.
When I feed, whether it be frozen or dry, I feed a little bit, let my fish eat it, then feed a little bit more, then let them eat it etc.
That way, not much goes to waste. If you thrown in 10 pellets at once, how fast can you fish eat? It's going to fall to the sandbed. If you throw 1-2 in, he'll eat them, then you throw in 2 more...
But yeah, go with frozen. I use the same method of feeding for frozen also. Pour a little bit of the tank water mixed w/ food at at time. Also, frozen doesn't sink to the bottom qUITE AS FAST.

That sounds perfect. some do 20% every 2 weeks or even less often, but the more often the better.
For a tank your size, it may be easier to do once every 2 weeks just because the amount of water you have to move. but if you don't mind, go w/ every week.
Make sure the salinity, and temp of the water is close to the tank's

Do you have a protein skimmer? Adding a protein skimmer and cheato into my sump (have to have just a basic plant lamp on it) my nitrates never registers... even after 6 months of not doing a water change (gone for training and wife took care of it).
I'm a firm believer in cheato and a skimmer, well a good skimmer.

haha ok thanks guys! :) umm another quick question for everybody why is my clown always close to the surface? And he kinda looks like he is gasping for air??? I am really confused about that and my other fish is just swimming around in the middle doing fine??? Any ideas on why he might be doing this?

my clowns always go towards the top. I think it's because they're always hungry. Even if my hand touches my glass top, they go straight up to the surface expecting food
