i have a 55 gal saltwater aquarium at home and i was wondering if anyone could give me some insight on seahorses because im thinking on buying one
First off, seahorses are VERY social animals..... they would do much better if you bought two as opposed to just a single seahorse. Whether you buy two females, a male/female pair, two males... it doesn't matter. They are much more active and relaxed having other seahorses with them.
With that said, a 55 gal would work well for 2 or 3 pairs of seahorses. First thing to do is decide which species of seahorse you would like to get. Stay clear of any "tank raised" seahorses. Buy ONLY captive bred seahorses. Either from a reputable online vendor - or preferrably direct from a breeder/hobbyist.
Keep in mind, having no stomachs - seahorses need to be fed their frozen mysis at least once....preferrably twice a day. No exceptions. If you have a busy social life or take lots of trips, etc you would need to have someone else feed the seahorses daily. They aren't like other fish where you can skip a day or two of feeding with no fear of a problem. You can't do that with seahorses.
Tank temps must be kept no higher than 74F on average. Depending on where you live, if this will be a problem you will need a chiller. Temps in the 76F or higher range can/will cause issues you do not want to deal with.
If you have specific questions on setting up a seahorse tank after reading past threads on this forum..... ask away and we'll all try to give you our suggestions and input.
