I am setting up a 40 long seahorse tank, and would like to keep florida ric and maybe a few mushrooms. I am looking at a t-5 fixture that is 36 inch long, and 78 wtts. The tank is only 14 inch tall, and by the time i get sand and rock in the will be even less to the top. will that be enough light.
I am also looking at a 110 wtt pc unit, but it does not have legs, so i dome know how i will put it over the tank.

T-5 with 78 watts will do ya. Did you look at VHO for that tank size? You could prolly get 2 VHO bulbs at 110w each.

why are you getting a 40 long for seahorses? they swim up and down not side to side. I would get the 37 tall if it were me. Thats my cousins tank for seahorses and they ALWAYS swim up and down. Good luck with the horses, my cousin has had not great luck with them.

I'd consider the t5 lights you mentioned low to moderate over the 40 gal display. It may be possible to keep carefully selected mushrooms...possibly a few ricordias.....maybe even some polyps......but you may find that the corals you choose won't do as well as they might under a bit more lighting.
Sounds like a very interesting seahorse tank...keep us posted as it progresses.

You will be fine with the long. You only need a tall tank if you want the horses to breed.
Also, my seahorses do swim side to side.
