i was kind of over doing that.. and stired up the sand bed pretty bad.. enough to see the glass on the bottom.. the rocks had some like whiteish cloudy dirt that came out of it.. and i never really cleaned the rocks like that since i first got it around march of 08..

Whoa! You shouldn't stir up your sandbed like that. You've got some beneficial bacteria that keeps your 'trates down. Uncovering them like that tends to kill them. Just clean the very top if you have to.

Forgot to ask, how deep is your sand bed?

3" is not good you need more like 5/6. I blast my rocks alot and white sh*# is everywhere thats why I have a can fliter to suck it all up.Just dont forget to clean the filter or you will have more problems.

i also have a can filter.. but it was a bacteria bloom that happend so all the stuff is almost clear again.. gonna do a 25% water change tommorow and see if the water is safe for fish again..

Yeah. A shallow (1 inch) sandbed probably wouldn't have caused your tank to crash. But 3" is more likely to cause what you had described. Anything deeper I would say definitely the cause. Water change should work. Sorry you lost your fish. Good luck with your next batch!!!

Turkey baster is the reef keepers friend. No need to do it like a hurricane though. Just a gentle use over the rocks every week at water change time. This will allow you to remove some of the detritus with the water change and then the filters will get more. Some people even use a power head for this but I am a gentle turkey baster kind of keeper. Live and learn and I hope the rest of your experience with this great hobby is better than this one.

I guess thats looking on the bright side. Now you know what you can't do. Disturb to deep in the sandbed.
