I posted a question a couple days ago about a fading damsel, followed the suggestions, and he is looking much brighter, thanks. I didn't know anything about reef vs fish tanks when I started this, I just put a couple lrs in because I thought they were pretty. Now I want to turn it into a proper reef tank. Is it too small? I have sent for a book, and won't do anything until I get it and read it, but I just wanted to know if there is anything important to avoid or to be doing while I am waiting. This is a very interesting site! Thanks. Elffin1@juno.com

My first reef tank was a 20 gallon, that was more than 20 years ago. I made a few mistakes, but it did quite well. It took about 6 weeks to cycle, but I did not have access to live sand or much live rock at the time. I used crushed coral, a little red lava rock, and tufa rock at the time. I also had an UG filter. I would not go any smaller than a 20 gallon tank to learn from, bigger would be better, but it is a good start.
Things have changed alot since then. I would recommend no UG filter, a deep sand bed, approx 1.5 - 2 lbs of live rock. Good lighting would be of great benefit for your tank. Power Compacts or good VHO lighting would work well on a 20 gallon tank. Read all you can. Books are good, but so is this forum, there are many knowledgeable people here, you can learn from their mistakes.
Remember that you local fish store may not be the best place to ask questions, they are usually interested in moving merchandise. Post your questions and someone will give you answers. You can also search old posts on the forum for more information. Do not be too impatient, it can cause more problems than waiting.
Welcome to the wonderful world of reefing, it can provide many hours of enjoyment. If done slowly and properly, you will be successful and contributing like the rest of us.

it definitely can be done, our one lfs has a 6 gallon nano, and it is beautiful, however, the bigger would be much easier for the beginner to keep, and much more stable, a 20 gallon reef will definitely be some work, but will be worth the effort to someone who is patient and consistant,
HTHand good luck

It can be done and done well, my 29 reef has been going well for alomst 5 years. Just stay on top of it, and keep a log of you test levels. This will help you see trends and help to prevent upsets.

you might consider going mh (metal halide)for your lights. just as a cost thing. i just built a 20 gal reef for a friend (just neing a few months ago) put a small mh on it and it is working fine. i built the mh for like 90 bucks. I use VHo's on my reef,so it is all personnal.

I feel really dumb--I still haven't quite figured out how to use this message board, and I just found the replies to my January 2 question. Sorry--please bear with me.
The book I sent for is by John Tullock, and the title is something like: Beginning with Marine Aquariums. I kind of have to stick with the 20 gallon for a while, for reasons of, well, money. Perhaps sometime in the future I could set up a bigger tank, and keep this for a hospital tank, but I want to try to make this one work, first.
