Well I was tired of killing fish when I QT so I set up a 35 gallon tank I had around, this was actually the first fish tank I had. I set it up with a sump which is a 20 gallon with one set of baffles, have to get a new pump tomorrow, go to run about 200 GPH and yes Snake I am going to put an AS on this one - have it so it is removable if I have to run any meds. Right now it has FW in it to leak check it, so far so good.
Thanks for looking. Or do I see a SH tank, hmmmmmmm - no I am buying a trio of Anthias at Christmas then my reef tank is complete. Oh did I tell you I have a green spotted mandarin in QT right now.

Looks Good
Quick question though. Why Qt the mandarin. Thier slime coat usually provents them from getting ick or at least thats what I have read. Does it have anything to eat in qt tank??

He is eating cyclops and every couple of days I put a hand full of cheato from the DT fuge, is that true about mandarins because I would really like to put him in the DT - I have read yes and no about QT - he looks healthy he swims around all day, I just think he will do better in a tank that has been running for 2 years.

You should keep him in QT so you can get him eating a variety of foods. They can get Ich. I would buy Coral magazine volume 8 number 6 nov/dec 2011 there are some good articles. In the QT there is no competition for food so you can fatten him up.

this is the info I keep finding
These fish don't get Ich as they secrete an oily substance on their bodies. Their skin type and the oils secreted make them extremely sensitive to many medications. What may heal one species will more than likely kill a mandarin. So if your other fish develop ich, the mandarin is not to be put in to quarantine. Which is fortunate because it would starve to death if you did, assuming the medication didn't kill it first.
Maybe pm Beth and ask her what she thinks.
T
Try some mysis. Mine likes those

The reason for putting him in QT is so you can target feed him and fatten him up. Also to get him eating foods that will be better at keeping him fat and happy. They can get Ich but do most of the time fight it off with little harm. I have read that fish with no scales can't be treated with medications unless they are for fish with no scales.

He seems to be eating I see him go after what ever I put in there - I think I am going to do three weeks of QT with him and I will see what Beth says - I know I have lots of pods in the DT fuge.

I would think if you are able to target feed him in the DT and he eats the better meaty foods you will do well. If it was my choice I would move him to the DT if he looked healthy with no sines of Ich for some time, and I felt he would eat whatever I put in front of him.

Ok I got some pictures tonight not the best they are taken with my cell phone. I did notice tonight when I fed the mandarin that he came up to the surface of the tank to feed off the floaters and some of the cyclops (with fresh gralic, ground up in blender) fell on a fake rock ledge and I could see him eating it. Here are some pictures, I personally think he is a bit thin but I definately have him eating. Sorry about the bad pictures but I think you can see his thinner belly. Thanks for looking!

Looks very good Al.......
I would have to agree with Geo on the QT.....Regardless of his ability to fight off ich, anything and everything should be QT......

Thanks Shawn - I PM'd Beth and she said that if they are eating well and if it doesn't look like there are any problems with the Mandarin to let it in the DT after 2 weeks of QT

Nice

How many times do you feed each day?
Two to three times a day mainly cyclops and a bit of mysis - he seems to like the cyclops better - my corals in the reef are pretty happy because I keep putting what I have left over in the DT.

Update pictures - I got the tank filled with RO and I put argonite in it 40 lbs - going to put a cup of sand from my reef tank, well I have to tell it is still kinda a QT tank but I have to tell you a story. I was at the LFS on the weekend and saw a real nice fuzzy dwarf - i walked away. Went back today he followed me as I walked by - he looks so healthy the fish guy said he was eating krill and is very active. So I asked them if they could hold him for me and they said no problem, he is just a baby not even 2 inches long. So the 35 QT has now become a QT for a dwarf lion, i was planning on getting one but I never really saw a nice one until this weekend. The 35 has a 25 gallon sump for a total operating volume of approximately 43 gallons. I am going to take my original AS from my reef (which has two running right now) and I am going to run a fluval 204 with lots of old media bags from my reef tank. I think the little guy will be alright. Pretty excited. THe other picture is my first attempt at making a glass aquarium - it is about 5.2 gallons it is going to be used for a Betta I have - I am going to put a lot of emergent plants in it, should be cool. Anyways thanks for looking. Oh the little tank that I made is approximately 26" long - 6" deep and 9 inches high, recycled glass from a 30 gallon tank I had.

Did you cut the glass your self?
I am about to build a tank just like yours to hold my top off water and would like to know how to soften the edge of the fresh cut glass?

Yes I did, I had an older 30 gallon tank with a crack on one of the short sides, so I took it apart figured I could use some of the glass for baffles in a glass sump I was making. I just sanded the sharp edges down with some regular sandpaper, I even used my palm sander on some. I was just practicing I have an old 120 gallon tank I am going to take apart cut and make into a frag tank about 60 x 24 x 12 (might go 48 long) haven't decided yet. Little nervous the glass is 1/2" thick

Well I was hoping that someone would comment on my idea for the 35 lion tank, do you think it will be alright with putting two bags of old media in the canister I am running with the sump set up. I want this little guy to do well (and I mean little he is barely an 1.5 inches long), I will have an existing Algae scrubber running by the weekend. Please comment. My other option is putting the green spotted Mandarin in the DT - he is doing great eating when ever I feed and no signs of any disease or anything - and then put the fuzzy dwarf in the 15 QT. I just could not let this fuzzy dwarf go I have been waiting 1/2 a year for this store to get a good one. Thanks Al

Al, it sounds like a good plan. I would say that it should be ok to put the mandarin in the dt now, and put the lion in a qt. congrats on purchasing it btw. I really like those. :) So....go get it already LOL.

Thanks luvmyreef, so lion in the 15 gallon QT - gives me more time to get some live rock in the 35 for the fuzzy (and of course mandarine in the DT - I don't think he could eat it but he might try.
