Hello all! I am new to the hobby and was given an existing tank. I have a Rena XP3 filter and an underground filter with a couple of powerheads. I am going to take out the UGF and replace the current substrate with sand. I have a few rocks in the tank. Now to my questions.
1. This will be a fish only tank, do I need a protien skimmer?
2. If I add live rock how much do I need to add? (I don't want alot of rock in the tank)
I have more questions but I cannot think of them right now. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!

First off, Welcome to the boards
As for the skimmer you don't have to have one for a fish only but they are very helpful in removing excess waste. For LR I would probably get about 1 lb per gallon if you don't want a lot but you could do more.

Removing the UGF and adding live sand is definately a good start. The protein skimmer isn't necessarily a must but I would strongly recommend it. They remove a ton of waste and improve the water quality. I would go with atleast 1 lb per gallon as said before but the more the better. Good luck.
