New Aquarium, Comments

So its small only 38g but you have to start somewhere. Heres what i have.
- 1" live sand as substrate
- AQUARIUM PHARMACEUTICALS RENA SMARTFILTER 30
- Aqueon 30 Power Filter
- 200 watt heater
- 60 gallon airpump, hookups to a house that lets out bubbles, and an airstone
- EHEIM COMPACT PUMP 300
- Protein Skimmer Counter Current Medium
Is that too much, or too little. Are there more things that i must add. I will post pictures asap.
Note: I have removed the protein skimmer for the time being, it takes up a lot of space in the tank, and i don't think i need the aeration. Does anyone know of another protein skimmer that would work better in my tank... or should i just wait till i upgrade to my 125 gallon tank in about a year.

use the skimmer and get rid of the house that is used to disperse the air bubbles

Okay..Then the other problem i have with the skimmer is i can get it to fit under the hood and there is not a big enough place to put a hole for it to come out of the hood...

the aquarium is one of those kits? comes with the top and the light together?
if so, if you can take the top off and run it like that you would be better off. the top will slow do evaporation and this will effect the gas exchange.
the skimmer is a hang-on type? it has a pump that sits inside the tank?
from what I found online about the skimmer I am alittle confused now. i dont know how the skimmers that use air pumps work. pretty sure someone else will chime in.

By house do you mean some kind of ornament?
Air-stone pumps are absolutely worthless in the SW hobby. You need serious water movement which can be accomplished with well places power-heads.
I'd like to recommend a good reference book for you, "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist". An all round excellent reference for new hobbyists.

i had a skimmer over 20 yrs ago that had a wood air block at the bottom .
funny i just moved a few months ago and threw it out.

Yes, It is one of those kits, but i replaced everything that came with it, besides the hood.... So no hood... okay...
It is the one that has the little wooden airstone, block thingie in it. and it is suctioned cuped to the side.
The House is an ornament.... ill just get rid of it and pick up either some live rock or some fake rock.
And get rid of the airstones, and place my power head.
