new camera any tips would help

i just purchased the cannon rebel t1i, i took it out and snapped some shots and it took way better pictures than my sony cybershot. but i would like to know some hints on what settings to shoot with. any advice will help because i know nothing about cameras except point and shoot. i will also be getting a tripod tonight.

i will asap i have been workin so many hours i have time for nothing! but this camera is amazing in the pic difference and im pretty sure i dont have the pics close to what they could be. i can tell big time on the close up pics

I was looking at getting a DSLR myself, just happened to see a nice Rebel XTi with a 17-85 Macro with Image Stabilizer Lens.
$500 seemed like a pretty smoking deal since the camera and lense retail for about $1500 new.
