Huge difference between the two cameras. Here is the old shot with my Nikon CoolPix2000....

Just would like to know how close you are to the tank when taking this picture?
Also, are you using your zoom or just being close gives you the whole tank?
What type of background lights are on?
I have a Sony that I just love, using natural light in the background for any picture i know gives really good color quality but when photographing tanks it can be a little bit more tricky. I would like to know how you all get those crisp clear pics.

Wow... Sure did change things. Did you check the settings?
Tank looks good, too.

Do you mean the settings on the old camera? Yes, I played with all the settings on the old camera and I'm still learning some of the more advanced features on the new one. I think the big difference was going from 2 megapixels to 5.

First step: Use a tripod!
I never had one before, but bought one with the camera. Using the tripod and setting the timer to 2 seconds or so makes a huge difference. I set the tripod up so the whole tank is within view at the widest zoom. The tank is only 29 gallons, so its not that big.
As for lights, I turn the flash off and turn all the lights off in the room. I'm not sure if your camera has an exposure setting, but I usually set mine to -2/3.
Thanks!

yeah, i have a coolpix 2100.. I need to toss it in the toilet, and get something real.. although you can do a lot in photoshop with contrasts, and color saturations to bring a lot of that good color out... Your 2nd pic does rock though...
