Well my new computer only came with a trial version of microsoft office. I like the old version better anyway and now they want 100$ for the full version of microsoft office. I will never buy another PC again next time I will go through apple. Anyways, is there anywhere i can download the old version of microsoft excel?

Do you still have it on your old computer, if you do you might be able to copy it onto a disc and transfer t to the new, don't know for sure but worth a try.

Help the poster out... DON'T turn this into a PC vs Mac debate.
Having said that, only post to help if it is legal. No "try this" download site...

you can't just put quicken on a cd and transfer it to another computer. you need to have the installation cd to do that.

Install the old Office you like onto the new computer. If you don't have the CD's, but still have the registration code you might be able to download the full version of Office at microsoft.com and activate it with the code.

The only way to do 100% legally would be bye the new one. That being said and with not mentioning websites, you need to find a local computer geek in your area. They would more than likely have numerous copies and versions laying around. Depending on they have it stop working , you might be able to change the date on your pc back to a few days after you bought it. I would only do this if there is something there that you need to get now. To do this just click on the clock and change the date back. It works with some and doesn't with others though. I know people that just keep changing their date , but it isn't practical for long term imo.

Any full copy of the software off the --- site will work no matter the version as long as it's for your version of windows. (98, 2000, xp) I would go with the newest version i could though, they not only make the software better, but fix some small things in updates. These things might never affect you or could really help out depending on what you are doing.

I know it doesn't help right now, but I always build my own computers and so I'm never surprised with what is/isn't on it. That being said, I'm sure your neighbor can help you out.

Isn't it true that you would need to uninstall the newer versio first? I think if you tried to install the older version that it may prompt you with a message stating that a newer version is installed. Not sure if that is true but doesn't really matter since he doesn't have the cds.

For those that use Microsoft, a great alternative, that also happens to be free and legal, is Open Office.
Open Office is an "open-source" type software that is developed by a large community of programmers from across the globe. because of it's open-source status, anyone can get the original kernel and develop their own applications based form that core.
Having said all this, you can find Open Office on their website . I personally use Open Office both at work as well as at home. I can save all of my files either as a Microsoft native format (.doc, .xls, .ppt, etc...), or I can save in the open office format.
It's saved me a few $$$ and I hope that it will help you.

Hope this helps!

I doubt that would work. Windows now keeps a lot of program data in the Documents and Settings folder on the C drive. I doubt running it off a slave would work unless you originally installed the program to the slave.
My vote is to use OpenOffice or Google Docs & Spreadsheets. If your looking for the Office 2003 interface and don't want to spend the cash, they're a win win. :jumping:

if you put [oldharddrive] as slave and [newharddrive] as master, the master gets the "c" drive name and the slave becomes "d". you can make a backup disk onto a flashdrive or a writable cd and then install it on the "c" drive. all you have to do is play around with the switches on the backs of the harddrives to get this to work.

That won't work. The programs need to be installed for the windows registry to pick up the locations of the files that are needed in order for the program to run. This is why you cant just copy a program from one computer to another.
