new coral

I just got a donut coral this weekend. The lfs said it could handle being halfway up my reef wall in the tank. Most of the websites I've read on this say it should be near the bottom and they prefer medium to low light. What does everyone suggest for it's placement under my lighting? High up in the tank/in the middle/down low. I'm starting to think down low, but my next q is can I put it right in the sand?

I would put it medium too low in the tank. Not sure about the sand bed though. Start in the middle and work you way down till it seems happy.

I agree with everything suggested by cboyfan. Doughnuts are typically found under ledges on the reef. They have medium to low requirements for light, and it looks like you've got plenty of that.:)

Give it plenty of space because it can expand up to twice it`s size! They also like a low current, it isn`t aggresive for a lps just needs plenty of space.

I agree with suggestions for low light and low current....I keep a cynarina on the sand bed with no problems...under your lighting maybe even shelter it a bit under a overhang if possible. Great coral...not a eye catcher...but a very nice addition. They do expand a bit so be sure it has plenty of room. Below is a pic of my cynarina...been with me now for 18+ months.

I have seen two types of Cynarina sp for sale Cynarina lacrymalis (like the one in NM reef's picture) and Cynarina deshayesiana (much more transparent almost jellie like).
Both are lower light, low current and both can go directly into the sand but the lacrymalis is much more delicate IME.
