New "cordless" PH

I've been looking at the VorTech powerheads. They look great, attach & transfer power thru the glass...so no cord or heat transfer in tank. Unbelievably expensive, though. Has anyone ever run across a similar, less pricey version? Probably still patent protected, but that won't stop overseas mfgs....Thanks!

I love the idea and concept but the pricing is just ridiculous. for three quarters of the year I pay to heat my tank any way so a little heat from a powerhead doesnt bother me enough to pay that much for a powerhead.

i know korlia makes some but i think the cord is inside the tank. but otherwise it seems to be the same thing.
You're right. I just really like the cordless idea. I'm a nut on gin-clear water, hiding cords, plumbing, etc. I'll spend hours eliminating one tiny bubble producing problem.

I've heard rumors from my local reef club that apparently these things heat on the outside so much that they can actually damage acrylic tanks.

You are right. Ive seen pics of acrylic tanks DESTROYED from these things. It leaves a huge circular melted acrylic ring on the tank!

About 400 bucks for a dangerous (that much heat could do more than scar acrylic) powerhead....I guess the great idea isn't quite perfected. After the mfg files bankruptcy due to the lawsuits, it should drive the price down, I think I'll wait. I sure wouldn't pay that kind of money just to hide a cord.

You sound pretty jaded. I mean the thing is a powerhead. One that I, myself would like, but haven't quite convinced myself to pay on the price tag attached to the equipment. But let's be real, this thing's not your average powerhead. No it's not just made so you can hide the cord outside. It comes with it's own controller that has multiple settings for multiple ways to move the water in your tank..and goes from as low as what 100gph? up to 3000gph. It may be overpriced, but it's definitely no maxijet.

Yeah, they do a lot more; I guess I wasn't real clear. I just thought the idea was neat and thinking maybe someone just copied the cordless part, no big deal...they'll be around in a couple of years, and maybe a safer. In the meantime, I'll be busy inventing Wi-Fi electricity---problem solved!

Its cool but its new and every new thing has problems. I would rather just get koralias and spend the rest on coral
