I purchased a new filtration system cuz I wasnt that happy with the old one I have. ANyways its a hang on eco-system with protein skimmer built in. All the directions say is how to use it when you are starting up your tank not how to with an established tank.. I dont want to crash my tank so Can I hook it up and start it running today or what?? Its got the miracle mud stuff with bio balls. and a light with it. What should I do???

It sounds like quite a filter...
Okay, first of all, how much live rock is in your tank? How much and what kind of substrate do you have? How big is the tank, and what fish are in there?
We need to establish whether the live rock and sandbed in your tank likely contains sufficient biological filtration to carry you through while your new filter settles in. If you have enough live rock and substrate, and a low enough bioload, you may be able to just swap them.
Tell us about your old filter too.

55 gal, two clowns, one bi-color blenny and a PJ cardinal. 25 nerite snails, 2 peppermint shrimp, 2 cleaner clams, 1 porcelain crab, 10 scarlet reef hermits, 20 blue/white hermits, some shrooms and corals too. Filstar XP4 is my current filter. and roughly 100lbs of LR, sand is aragamax I would say 25-50lbs I really dont know, the bag was 19.99 at petsmart. The tank has been set up for 2 1/2 months now and is doing GREAT! I was just sick of allll the stuff hanging in my tank and wasnt satisfied with the filtering. So I went for this. Hope I mentioned everything

Filstar is a canister filter isn't it?
If so, can you not add this new filter and run both filters at once for a while? If you can, this would be ideal. Just run both the new and old filter, and after a couple months, remove the old filter entirely.

Yup its a canister, and I can do that. I was going to return the old filter to the store cuz they said they would refund the money BUT crashing my tank is not something I want to do just to save some $$

Great little HOB refugiumsump. You can start running this whenever you want to. The only concern I would have with using this exclusively is you don't have any filter then that can accommodate filter floss and or chemical filtration like carbon and such. Unless the slot where the sponge is could hold something like that.
