i am thinking about getting a marndin i hear they eat copepods the question i have is, i like to clean my sand with a gravel vacuum will i lose all the food by cleaning my gravel this way

No, pods live in the rocks. I recommend you buy a ORA mandarin they will except other foods then just live. Use the QT period to get him to eat, without being harassed by other fish..

not all the time. There have been numerous stories on other forums where their mandarin died of starvation since it didn't eat prepared foods.
OP, what size tank do you have? # of LR? How old is your tank? current livestock? feeding habits? refugium?
