New Fluval 12 Edge, live sand, very cloudy and now I have dead fish

I made a dumb mistake.
Set up a new Fluval 12 gallon, with live sand. The water was very cloudy but cleared up 75%. We have very hardy fish for two years in a 29 Biocube.
tested the water twice in 24 hours and no changes.
we added the fish.
24 hrs later to be exact, all three fish started darting around the tank and within two minutes all were dead.
WHAT DID I DO??
All the hermit crabs are still there but they have been a bit lathargic (spelling).
Today I've did a 30% water change and it's still cloudy.
All my tests on day one read 0's
next day my ammonia was up, as was my nitrates.

Sorry to hear about your issues.
Did you just set this tank up and put in fish with out cycling the tank?? Do you have any live rock in there?
The water did not change parameters the first 24 hrs even though you did two tests because there was nothing to make it change. You did not have anything in there to make it change. Once you added the fish then your ammonia went up.
Still that is real quick for ammonia to kill three hardy fish. What kind of fish were they? You had them for 2 years in a biocube??
I would keep the tank as is without fish and use a raw shrimp, or ghost feed the tank to get the cycle moving. Check out the sticky thread about cycling a tank. Always a good refresher.
Good Luck with the new tank!!

They were a blenny and two full grown clowns.
I really know better then that to put my fish in so quickly. I don't know what i was thinking. But again, one minute they were eating their dinner and the next all 3 fish were acting as if they were electrocuted. the clowns were at the opening of the tank trying to jump out.

Yeah, that sounds crazy. Did you check for any stray voltage?? Sounds way too fast for it to be from bad water quality. Maybe there was a lack of oxygen?? Do you have any surface movement in the water?? I think I have seen a Fluval Edge before, don't they have a full sealed cover? Could you tell if there was any way of getting oxygen to the water?

No we didn't check as everything is brand new. New heater, new overflow new tank.
We are concerned about the oxygen. The Fluval Edge the water goes all the way to the top 1/5 to the opening of the tank. the mouth of the tank is about 5"x5". the tank tends to form bubbles on the top (because it's mostly enclosed.
There are people online who have these tanks for years, but no one has said anything about flow.

Spent my lunch hour at LFS - explained everything to them.
We are leaning towards electrocution due to the quickness of the deaths.
So a new powerhead will be purchased along with a new surge protector just in case.
The tank, lighting and overflow are brand new.
this is so disturbing.

As for the flow, I did talk to them about it.
There are people who have had these tanks for years without oxygen issues. the top is open

I thought it was a closed top. My bad.
as long as there is room for good oxygen exchange with the surface that is not the reason. You got yourself a weird one man. I hope the next attempt goes better. Good luck!!
