If the mat is purple I would guess green star polyps. but it could be a type of clavularia the small polyp kind but I doubt it.

that looks like it, but do they encrust? i thought that pagodas grew their own base like montis? ok, assuming that it is a pagoda cup i will go do a search, and likely find out that it is impossible to keep. ill be back!

My pagoda cup is about 6 inches across and has about 80 polyps, and it has been super easy to take care of!

Mines mid tank, in medium flow, because it does put out a little slime everyonce in a while. I have 200 watts of pcs over my tank, its a 60 gallon, but its a corner bowfront so the lights are only 36" long, similar to a 40 gallon footprint.
I have gotten TONS of little polyps sprouting around the edges, its growing nicely, nice pretty blue body, with blue and purple polyps.

It is growing off a little slab of liverock, the whole coral isnt encrusting the rock, just a small part. It looks like the coral is just growing off the end of the rock. I will get a pic when my wife gets home with the camera. Their fun coral to have, my flame hawk loves to swim on top of it and shut all the polyps.

hawks are so cool. im thinking about getting a longnose for the 75, but i dont want to have problems with it eating shrimp.
anyways, thanks for all the info, im really hoping that it is a pagoda since the reputation for flowerpots is pretty depressing.

I love my flame hawk, they do mess with shrimp though, him and my royal dottyback .
This is exactly what mine looks like. But i have seen them in a block shape, and also in a bowl shape. I think the odd shaped ones have just been attacked by something, or ripped off.

definatly a pagoda cup. sometimes they will encrust before growing in the more traditional cup/disk shape.

bumpin this back up, i pretty much ignore this coral, but ive been feeding it lately and it seems to dig it. was i supposed to be feeding it this whole time? i saw in a book that theyre related to sun corals? it hasnt grown much since i got it but it has gotten some baby polyps.
