I've just purchased a small 2 inch gold banded maroon clown and a 3inch humma humma to add to my 120g along with my 8 damsels, 2 1/2 inch Tomato clown and 3 inch porcupine puffer. Initially i was worried for my Tomato clown but when i turned on my light to see how everything was doing, they thought it was time 2 eat, and my maroon came out of hiding and my Tomato went after him. So my tomato might have to go back tomorrow not because his life was in jeopardy like i originally thought but because he "may" kill my $60.00 beautiful gold band maroon. Tell me what u think, if he's still chasing my maroon by the time i get off of work tomorrow he's certainly going back to the lfs ASAP.

Interesting, I guess I would have thought in a tank that size you might be ok....But the big Clowns can be horribly territorial, hopefully both can pick a territory and things will settle down.

8 damsels, a tomato clown and a maroon clown, i have a feeling this will be a problem. I would try to catch and get rid of as many regular damsels as you can, they will stay territorial and probably so will the tomato,, and the maroon (if large enough) will just start to kill everyone else
but will probably scuffle with the tomato alot unless hes gone

Big clown species will seldom tolerate each other; even in larger tanks. When the Huma gets big enough to eat the damsels; you'll have a much better group of fish, IMO.

I actually haven't had any problems with my damsels. I
ve learned from my past to never purchase any blue devil damsels when cycling my tanks. As soon as i turned my lights on to begin feeding my Tomato rushed at my gold banded maroon, i immediately took him out. He's now back in the lfs. I was not about to risk the investment i just made with my maroon. The humma humma, puffer and damsels dont bother each other at all. The damsels chase "each other" around occasionly but i haven't had one die since i bought all eight of them months ago

You'll probably be OK with the damsels as long as you stick to non-wussy fish. They are pretty little fish.

I agree, they are pretty little fish. Do they shoal? Too bad you had to get rid of your tomato. I have one with a picasso and they get along great (so far!). The maroon GS is a great fish too. On another note, $60 seems pretty expensive. I haven't bought one in a long time, so I guess prices have gone up!

My tomato clown is a nightmare who chases everything in my tank. To bad he has been around so long or he would definately be on his way back. I think tank raised are worse than ocean caught. I have had both and my tank raised is way nastier. Probably because they grow up in small tanks with a zillion other clowns around. You did the right thing taking him back.
