new in sump skimmer... what is this thing?

So I just got a hand-me-down in sump skimmer from a fish store (net cost 0 dollars). I am psych'd because it will fit in my tiny 10g refugium that I am building...
However in the collection cup there is a little nossle attached to a pice of vinyl hose that I am unfamiliar with. It looks as though the hose is supposed to feed to somewhere?.... I was under the impression that stuff accumulating within the collection cup was considered the 'bad' stuff yet this seems to be geared toward syphoning off excess water or something?
Any clues on where this hose should go or what its for? :thinking:
any help as always is greatly appreciated.

its probably a collection tube you can run to a remote tank so you dont have to empty the cup as often.
if it is conected to the collection cup then thats what it is.
if you have room ,take an empty 1 gal. container and run it in there to collect the skimmate.
