I would go with a 240 gal set up. The advantages to a big tank more fish, maybe schooling fish, big reef etc. draw backs maint. time will increase, cost of maintaining a larger tank andsince you live in CA. the power cost will increase. PG&E will love you. You have to remeber that when you do a water change it will be 50 plus gals. I would also run two filter systems. Most of the wet dry filter I have seen are rated to 200 gals.
All in all if you have the time and money I say go for it. I wish I could, but I am limitted on space. It could be a very fun and rewarding project just remember to take it slow.
