Seen a new lfs when the wife and I were out around town today and decided to stop in. Nice store inside and even carried saltwater stuff. 90% of them here dont do any saltwater and I live on the gulf. Anyway was looking at some filters and they wanted $170.00 for a Fluval 404 the same filter I can get online for $85. Now I'll pay markup. I know everyone has to make a living but double. That is ridiculous! All their prices were like this needless to say I wont go back. It's no wander lfs get such a bad rep. Some day I'll hit the lottery and open a store and sell everything at cost. Sorry about the bitch but what about the poor newbies that pay such prices.

Get used to the prices unless you are close to a big city. Even then, LFSs mark up the prices a lot. I buy almost all my drygoods over the www except for heavy stuff (salt etc.). I have always got my fish from a LFS because I can see exactly what I am getting and I don't have to take someones word on what kind of shape or condition they are in. Mabey someday I will venture out and by fish from the net.

I live in Los angeles, and I shopped around a lot before buying my Fluval 404, the cheapest I could find it was for 140, I bought it online for 90 bucks. Justin

Yea pricing at lfs is amazing. For example here IO salt is $10.25 at one store(50gal mix). They sell it this cheap(if you can call 10.25 cheap) to get people in the store. Everything else is expensive. Another store sells the same bag for $17.95. I wonder why the other place even carries the stuff. The sad thing is the place that had the expensive price is a chain store in the area. I don't by dry goods from lfs anymore either. I use to do it when i lived in pa because i lived close to the large pet store in centerville(I'll leave out the name because it is also a large on-line competitor of swf.com)
