New Lights!!!!!

I think I got a good deal at my LFS.? I got a 72" hanging light that has 3 175 wt MH 10,000K, and 2 165 wt VHO blue actinic. This system was used and I got it for $350 with the bulbs. Was this a good deal and I describing the bulbs correctly? So they tell me this system is fine for coral and anenomies (sorry spelling?) is this correct? If so how should I be running the lights? Which ones and how long? Here is a before and after pic with my old strip light and now the new hanging one. Also should I be running these at all while I am cycling?

yup you got a good deal......the bulbs may need replacing soon as they are used...i think it's 3x175w MH + 2x110w VHO never heard of 165w vho.

My oppinion.
I would cycle with as few lights as possible. But still provide some light o keep things pretty, and keep any 'life' in the tank.
Sending a lot of light into a tank thats still cycling is asking for an algee problem.
As far as lighting. Id depends on who you are.
Iv herd and seen lots of different oppinions.
I personaly stick to the "mother nature" idea.
I run my PCs for (counts on fingers) 7.5 hours in the day and thats it. I have a blue light that kicks in 1.5 hours before it and runs 1.5 hours after it kinda simulating moon light. Once thats out, its just a tiny little led for the night.
As for the MH bulbs. Check them. Look for greasy finger prints and get them off. You can extend the life of those bulbs by simply never touching the glass. The grease from our fingers shortens the lifespan of the bulb, same as halogen bulbs.

Like coach said check the bulbs. maybe even ask LFS if they know the owner to find out how old they are.

Thanks guys! Yes the bulbs will need to be replaced soon, we did talk about that, and I know the bulbs can be expensive, I am hoping to find a place that sells them for a good price. So is this light ok for corals and anenomies? Thanks!

They make he 165w VHO in the 72" only I believe.

How should I be running these lights and how long daily? I mean should I run the MH and the actinics all day or seperately and how long? Also do I NEED lunar lights or not? Thanks Again!!!

Run them both during the day, actinics about 2 hours for the dusk setting. I'm not sure on the time thing, I"m sure you'll get conflicting times, but IMO its 9 hours all then 2 hours actinic. And no, you don't need moon lights, but they are cool. (Ms.)

do you have anything in thtere that would truly benefit from the MH photosythetic features?? i would risk waisting the rremaining life of the MH bulbs if there is nothing but rock or fish in there..... with addition of corals you can begin MH intrioduction ....but fish and LR wont need it ad much .... i'd just use my supplimental lighting ... 165wvho's
