Some algae is good, but green is an indication of overfeeding the tank! The "purple stuff" is coralline algae, and needs the correct amount of calcium (400 to 500 PPM) to propagate. Brown algae is from sunlight, and green algae is from overfeeding the tank. I had the same problem, but after I cut way back on feeding, the green is gone and the tank is happy & healthy. Good luck!
