I just got my first maroon clown 2 days ago. She is huge probably 4 inchs long.
I don't think shes happy. Either shes swimming in one place all the time, or shes all over the tank looking like she wants out!
Ive been watching my parameters, and ammo was up 0.25 for a little while, but I did a small water change and it seems to be done to 0. She is used to having her own BTA, but right now its at a friends house until she can get it off the rock its on. Could this be why she acting wierd? OR is she even acting werid? Is this normal?
Her tank mates are a Algea blenny and a yellowtail damsel, niether seem to bother her or really care. any ideas?
thanks

Megan where did the ammonia come from? I would research this so it does not become an issue. Ammonia is very bad as you know.

meg mine does that somtimes. she is probably just getting used to her surroundings. do you have any frogspon or corals like that?? if not you could buy one they are only like $40. a cheap substitute for the anenomie.

The ammo, now that I stop and think about it....I use my tap water for topof water. Not the best thing I can be doing since its city water...but I do declorinate. I think my test kits are picking up the cloramines/chlorine and giving me a false positive. Theres no where and nothing that should be giving off ammo. I haven't had any deaths and my corals are doing great. I do have a frogspawn a pretty good size one, she (clown) doesn't seem to care about it. I feel better knowing that she could just be getting used to her surrounding. She did go from a 135g tank to a little 30g, I guess It would take me alittle getting used to also! :)
Thanks for the responses!

Give your clown time. When I put mine in the tank it darted all over the place, now it is quite happy in my hairy mushrooms and swimming about. So give it some time in the new tank and it should be just fine......

All new fish take time to settle in. My bicolor blenny would just scoot and hide when my coral beauty angel came near. Now the blenny is out and about and stands up to anything. None of the fish were being mean but new fish just need to settle in and feel comfortable.
Good luck, you will love you maroon. I love mine they are just like velvet swimming in the water.....

Can I ask you if your clown is agressive? Mines starting to get a tad aggressive.
I have a75 gallon tank. He's in with four cardinals, one hogfish, one blue
tang
He's been with the tang awhile. I have to get some more fish but was thinking
of taking him out but I do love him. He's one of my original fish that have
lasted so long. Thanks if you can help me. I've posted many times
in other areas and hardly ever get an answer.

I have a small maroon and he is not agressive yet. He is not very big probably in time. He is hosting a green star polyp just swims around in it alot. The Maroon is the most agressive of the clowns.

I have never had cardinals, hogfish or a tang so that is hard for me to answer. What fish were you thinking of getting?

I'm thinking the clown might be upset by the hogfish. Although they aren't
really hurting each other. I love my clown though. I'm wondering if I should
have a host coral for him if he would be happier. The anemonies scare me though
as I read they are poisonous. I would have to change my lighting.
I'd love to see your setup. Thanks for answering. I have had this clown since
the beginning with the tang. The cardinals are very peaceful and swim
together. I have a lot of live rock for them to hide in too. I'm very sad
about my flamehawk which I had since the beginning too :(.
I will also try to get a picture up.

Do you see the clown and the hogfish together? I think your clown might be just protecting his place in the tank. They are the most aggressive of the clownfish. I have also read as they get older and bigger they can be more aggressive.
What do you have in your tank for corals right now?
I don't have an anemone due to my lights either. I keep mushrooms, anthelia, and two toadstool leathers which are small frags right now.
My coral beauty and the maroon rule my tank. The only fish they chase away at times but never hurt is my little yellowtail blue damsel which like you was my first fish 3 years ago and I just love this little fish. My bicolor blenny has attitude and just does what it wants.
I posted two pics of my tank. Believe me it is nothing to write home about. I need more rock and I have some small white rock in there that I am taking out little by little. I don't want to stir up the sand to much all at once. I have one plastic plant to fill in those gaps till I can get more rock. This 3 year hobby takes a while for me as the cost is not so nice here in Canada.
Anyhow, I don't know what else to tell you other than to sit and observe your tank. The first pic of my tank has two leathers in there which are new.

That is gorgeous. It could be too they weren't eating enough food as the
others were getting it faster maybe. I do feed a variety of frozen food
and try to make sure they are all eating. I will observe as you say that's
a good idea. I'll take pictures today. I don't have any coral yet but would
love to start some. I have a birthday next month and am thinking of doing
that. I have quite a bit of gorgeous live rock. Thanks for helping me I hope
I didn't hijack this thread with my questions. The clown is gorgeous though
and I'd hate to get rid of him. He is fun to watch as he redecorates the
tank :). Take care and post more pics for sure.
