New MH compared to an old MH

Can you tell the difference between the new bulb and the 6 month old bulb? Huge difference isn't it?
FWIW, I run the dual 400 watt PFO HQI ballast and Radium bulbs. I try to swap em out every 6 months. I start out running them 6hrs a day and increase 1hr every month.

I start at 6hrs a day and increase 1hr evey month as the bulbs get weaker the time frame increases.

He is...
Acclimating to both the higher PAR of the new bulb (shorter hours-6) and the loss of PAR at the end of it's usefull life (longer hours- 12)

i heard it looks like a huge difference when it isn't to huge (to the

[hr]
eye).....but i still change every 6 months to a year (with six 250w pendants it gets a little pricey to switch our the bulbs!)

yea it is still huge maybe more with radiums then with some other bulbs (now that i take a good look at it).........yea it is going over my 180g.......not much to look at yet i jsut have my lights breaking over my pool table (just making sure everything works for a week or so)....everything is going to be setup on the 4th and i am going to start a thread sometime soon (hopefully things are crazy cause i am switching schools..again) yea the lighting is insane........lights cost more than my total 55g with live stock  .......some ppl say it is to much over a 6 foot tank but i will show picks of my hood setup..its pretty cool

obviously your gonna keep sps, so are you gonna have a calcium reactor? What about a protein skimmer.

6 X 250's because they are stronger than 400w (i am using DE and they are said to be brighter) and plus I am mixing 10k and 20k (next time i switch bulbs 6500k and 20k) and this gives me better growth than using 14k's but gives me the same color......plus i can use my 20k as actinic effect and use my 10k to simulate the strong light around noon on the reef.......
I have a Korallin 3002 which is rated for an 800g but should be perfect for my 180g (with sps tanks you usually want to get a cr rated 4 times more than your aquarium.....plus i have a 24" x 12" x 18" frag tank hooked up)
I curently have 4 protien skimmers for this tank...a Euro-reef a 5-6 foot Counter Current, a seaclone (dedicated to the frag setup which is also hooked on to main tank), and a Tunze comline which is a wierdly designed skimmer, but works well.

....The DE's are nice they just don't penetrate as deep as the 400 SE and they don't have as big of spread as the SE. The Par out put is just as good tho. Back when I used em they only had 10K's. I couldn't stand the tank color and the coral color so I traded em for the Radium setup.

Wow, that's a huge difference. Thank you for posting that, I was just getting ready to order some new bulbs. I run 3 175's and 2 96PC's on my 170bow. What degree color temp would you recommend for halides? Right now I have 14K hamiltons on there, they looked good at first but really washed out here recently. I'm keeping a little bit of everything, lps, sps, softies, clams, gorgonians, etc.

Since you have the PC's I'd go with 10K's (if the PC's are actinics) IMO, you can't beat the Ushio 10K bulb.

The only time I saw 20K's they were sooooo blue it made the tank not fun to look at. IF you had a lot of neon colors, yellows, oranges and greens, I suppose they would be a good looking light. To me though they are so blue it is crazy.

I'd swap out the 10K VHO for another actinic and use 10K Ushio's. There not that yellow. I have even seen some tanks with only 250 watt Ushio's that look good. The guy who kept my corals for me while I was out of the hobby last year ran 2x250 watt Ushio's. The 400 watters are much more yellow then the 250's...
here's a side shot of the tank I mentioned above.

It depends on the bulb. The 400 watt 20K Radium is crisp white on the HQI. On the other ballast is just not as bright so people tend to see it as blue, I don't. I've ran em side by side with the HQI, E ballast and standard ballast. They kind of look blue because their not as bright, unless you see em side by side then you can tell.
The CV bulbs look almost as nice as the Radiums on the HQI, problems is they only last a few days on the HQI ballast. The 20K XM's are blue, the 20K Ushios are blue too....
I'm talking 400 watt bulbs here.......

Golfish have you seen the newer DE bulbs lite next to a 400w.......they seem like they can penetrate just as deep...although i admit the spread is crap...but that doesn't matter if you have 6 over a 6 foot tank cause there is little space that doesn't have a bulb over it......once i get my tank set up i will show the insane brightness of it and you can tell me if you think they don't penetrate that deep.....(plus my bulbs are 20 inches above the tank and they still penetrate to the bottom)

dont want to hijack but i am going to set up a 20 long propogation tank and have no idea how i am going to fit actinic supplements in because the reflector is the same width of the 20 long so there will be NO room from front to back.
thanks so much.
