I just set up a 20 gal. QT. I am using a canister filter pumping 300 gal per hour, the filter chosen is a non-carbon sediment filter. i added a piece of LR from my main tank for the cycle. how long will this cycle take and is it normail for the water to cloud up after a couple of days?
btw i am not using any substrate other then a few shells and the LR.
is this a good start for a qt?

Hey world, the cloudy water could be from the sediment filter or it could be a bacterial bloom. Hard to say. I have had this happen to me when I have set up FO tanks and many times I've had to take care of it with mass water changes.
If you haven't already, please read the FAQ Thread at the top of this page. There is a good deal of info there on QT. Also, if you used new water for your QT, I would go ahead and drain it off replacing it with water from your display [as long as the water quality there is good].

i agree with beth in taking some water from the display and put in the the qt. but if you don't do that and start with new water from my own experience it usually takes 4-6 weeks.
