New Quarantine tank

So, I've been lazy and haven't done a QT before... However, since I am planning on seahorses, so I want to get it right (or at least the best I can)! I bought a zoa frag and some halimeda today. I am quarantining them in a 2.5 gallon tank with an internal filter ($20 for tank and filter). I do not have a light for it, but it is up against the DT so it gets some light. I dipped the zoa frag with Coral RX and YUCK! there was all kinds of stuff on the bottom of the tank when the 10 minutes were up. I'm going to keep them in the QT for a few weeks before adding them to the DT.
I did have a question, do I dip the halimeda? If so, in what? Also, besides doing a predetermined amount of time, is there an indicator of when they can be added to DT?
