This is my first thread and I've wanted a reef aquarium forever...Been reading these boards for the past 3 years have numerous books and now finally am getting a tank. Any and all advice would be welcome I feel more than confident, but only a fool knows everything and I don't want to be the reason that some expensive fish die off 4 months after I cycle the tank... As I understand the longer the cycle the better.

Welcome to the boards
Books are good starting guidelines for what you are interested in this hobby. Most people have been there before I know I was. The more you ask on this site the more you learn and increase your abilities as I see you have been doing. One tip especially for reefs is plan on what you ultimately want to put in your tank. You can never truly have enough room IMO

how much live rock would I need for my 34 gallon I know 5 gallons of it is used by the skimmer and all the pumps...I've read that roughly 1/3 of the tank volume is sposed to be LR...So how many punds is that?

From what I've heard your supposed to have at least one pound per gallon. I have a red Sea Maxx as well and as soon as I start it up I am going to be putting 30 pounds of Lalo Live Rock and then maybe 5 more pounds of Fiji Live Rock if I think it needs it.

I aim for 1.5 lbs of LR per gallon. Ive got almost 1.5-2 lbs right now, and it doesnt look like a quarry. Its all about placement. You could even buy half of it LR and the other half dry/dead rock. Itll become "live" over a few months and act the same way as normal LR.
