New sand: on top/below older live sand?

I want to buy new sand, should I place in below the old sand that is alive or on top of it?

on top is fine, but no more than 1/4" above at a time

yea, but if you go with smaller sand vs larger sand pieces you'll find that the small pieces work their way to the bottom, and the larger ones stay on top.
just be careful... if you get bagged "live sand" you'll probably have a nice ammonia spike. you're better off putting it in like a 10 gallon tank for a week and let it cycle.
