new sump set up ( confused)

Im new to the site. starting first reef tank soon. I want a sump set up, but i dont totally understand it. I get the pluming, and the basic construction, but I dont get the whole no filetr media idea. could someone please explaine thanks

A sump is a place that you will be able to hook up a skimmer or other equipment that is out of sight. You may also provide some sort of rock or gravel that bacteria will grow on and that Amphipods will grow underneath and in the cracks. You also may provide lighting and grow macroalgea. My sump is one of the most crucial parts of my tank because I have chosen to not use a protein skimmer. I just grow macro algea instead. There is a lot to be learned about building a sump or refugium. If I were you, I would just read about peoples problems and solutions to sump related ideas before you dive in.
