Were you planning to move substrate and/or live rock along with the fish? Were you planning to switch over your filtration (if you have any) to the new tank? It is my understanding that the water does not contain the beneficial bacteria, etc, but the substrate, rock, and filter media DO. A more experienced person can correct me, but I don't think the water will do much of anything for you. Good Luck! (fellow Wisconsinite!)

You should be able to gently and carefully move everything over without any problems with spikes and such. As long as your rock and such is not out of the water for more than a few hours, dieoff will be so little it may not even register on your water tests. As for moving the water over, where it is true that it won't be of any consequence to your filtration, it WILL aid the fish by keeping their stress level lower if you move most if not all of the water with them, and mix new water to fill the tank the rest of the way. The old water will act as an acclimator to keep your fish from being stressed by sudden change in pH and salinity and such.
