I'm sorry if I missed the sticky or if we have one already..... I know in this hobby there are many different opinions, but we can certainly agree with most facts... When I was a newbie I made tons of mistakes, and no one gave me any accurate info except the internet and searching... To make a long story short, here are some things the newbies must get down before setting up a tank......... all experts please add to this...
make sure you cycle your tank, and have some kind of good filtration system according to your tank size
add live rock and live sand (if you choose to go that route)
get the acclimation method down pat! I've killed way too many fish, cause no one ever told me how to introduce them......
get a clean up crew (snails, hermits, etc...)
add fish slowly(1 fish added per month)
quarintine all new fish for a month, making sure they are healthy
research which fish can be compatable w/ others (there are exceptions, research!)
keep the temp constant, or change slowly... same goes for salinity which should be 1.025
(there are also exceptions to this rule, an aggresive tank can have lower salinity
change 10% of water every 10 days or two weeks, making sure that the salt is premixed at least a day before with purified water or reverse osmosis water... when doing so, make sure the temp is not more than 2 degrees off, and the same with the salt. Water is extracted using a "vacum"
this is all i can think of for now.... and I am sure the experts will help out and add a bit more..
just make sure you research and ask questions....
happy fishing! :happyfish
