Hi I have a recently cycled tank and am sooooo glad I found this site before I started doing anything. I have a 135 with a wet dry filter and looks like I'm stuck with 5 damsels (I can't catch) and I just added my first fish a wimplefish (mock moorish idol) I was going to go for a couple of tangs but will not after reading all your comments. Could you suggest which fish are the hardiest I want a peaceful pretty tank (if possible) Any suggestions i.e. success stories would be much appreciated. thanks

I don't know why tangs get such a bad rap! The yellow tang, actually, are my favorite. They are generally peaceful, as long as you don't put same species in same tank; however, with the size of your tank, you could probably put 3 in together. Yes, they do get territorial, so make tangs last fish in the tank. I frankly, have never had a problem with them as long as you adequately address their need for high veggie diet. They are grazers, and may pick at your live rock etc, but if you keep a supply of lettuce clipped to the glass, this should cut down on that problem. So, I say, if you want tangs, go for it! Get babies and rear them all together! Good luck

TRY A POCUPINE PUFFER. MINE CAN SEE ME DIP FEEDER FISH FROM A FISH BOWL ABOUT 10 FEET AWAY AND HE GETS SO EXCIDED HE SOUNDS LIKE A MOTOR BOAT GOING ACROSS THE WATER. THEIR HARDY, BUT ONLY ONE PER TANK. IF YOU DON'T WANT YOUR DAMSEL, A PUFFER WILL TAKE CARE OF THEM. BE SURE AND READ THE COMPATABILITY CHART.

The only one around here who thinks tangs suck is krazzydart. (don't mind him, he must of had a really bad experience or something). Tangs are great, you have a great size tank for them, and the only time you might worry is too many of the same kind, or body style, (like some are oval and some are round. Most are hardy, pretty, and peaceful. Also try pygmy angels. Remember to add slowly, one fish at a time with a few weeks in between. Good Luck

I have alot of tangs the only one I would not recommend is the sohal (zebra tang) he is a creep and I have been trying to get him out for 6 months now.

THANK ALL OF YOU THAT ANSWERED ME I AM REALLY GLAD ABOUT THE TANGS AS I REALLY WANTED SOME. THE PERSON WITH THE ZEBRA TANG IS THAT THE SAILFIN TANG? THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP

I am sooo envious of your big tank! I would love to have such a big tank to fill with my favorite fishes, and I'm glad you're getting some tangs -- they're great!

About the damsels.. how big are they? I doubt that puffer could "take care of them" they're pretty tough. But they don't take up much space, so don't worry about them. I think you should get a few diff. kinds of tangs maybe clown and yellow, and get some angelfishes, they're very colorful, tend to be peaceful, but are very good at defending themselves. DON'T get more than one of the same species though!

angels (you may find you can mix a few different kinds, you may not, try adding them at the same time), tangs are fine, the sohol (zebra) is expensive and beautiful but definately is a brute, the sailfin, both red sea and regular is a nice fish, the purple tang is awesome, nasos (all of them) are great, powder blue is probably the most beautiful in my opinion, the achilles is stunning to look at but does not live long in the home aquarium in most cases, a six line wrasse is a must, a flame hawk is a must, a blenny, a goby, a jawfish, clowns are great, a harlequin tusk is an expensive but neat fish for a fish-only, a black cap or another one of the basslets or dottybacks is another good choice, just make sure your tank is set up right and you have lots of rockwork for them to hide and also be sure to give them different kinds of food and make them happy, have fun
