FOWLR= Fish Only With Live Rock

But you said you have some Kenya tree coral in there so you kinda have a reef tank now. You might want to look into some articles on filtration. There are lots out there that can give you a more complete understanding of SW tank filtration and nutrient exportation. There are as many different ways to do it as there are types of fish you can put into our little slices of the ocean. Start with a good understand of the nitrogen cycle and the three different types of filtration (and why each is used in a SW tank) and go on from there.

You will get many opinions on this site in answer to your very important question. Here's my $.02:

1. HOB filters work fine, but you must be faithful in maintaining them since they do accumulate junk that breaks down into toxins.
2. Sumps are great - you can hide your equipment in them, they increase the volume of water in your system which aids in stability of water params, and you can raise macroalgae in them easily. Perhaps you get the idea that I prefer sump systems.
3. A skimmer is very handy to have if you are doing a reef, but not necessary for a FOWLR system. A well-run system using just macroalgae (chaeto or an algae scrubber, for example) can replace a skimmer in the opinion of many people.

Ok so of I wanted to start with a cheaper setup starting with a good hob filter and a couple power heads would be ok?

If you go the HOB filter route I found it best to get a filter with two pads and change only one pad each time alternating at each replacement. That way the pad you don't replace keeps good bacteria in the tank.

Example: Month 1- Replace the left pad leaving the right pad untouched.
Month 2- Replace the right pad leaving the left pad untouched.

Just remember not to replace the same pad every month leaving the other in the filter month after month as it will start to release toxins into your system and wipe everything out. Like GeriDoc said, remain faithful in maintaining it.

I know I probably sound redundant but I'm just trying to make a point.

Keep a written record of all your maintenance and test results so you can keep track of everything. Speaking of redundancy, I keep a small book with all my recordings as well as an online record.

Silverado61 is rt on. I run 4 cartridges in mine and usually every month month and a half change them out in rotation. I may also be crazy but I get alot of pods in my filter so before I toss the old one I let it sit on top of my filter to drip dry and allow any pods to hop off and into the filter/tank.
over stocking is a tough question. A hippo tang would over stock a 90, but a few fire fish, pair of clowns, fox face, yellow tang, wrasse, mandarin, scooter blennys, ect would be fine. I just listed my 75 stock btw lol

Ok I'm really excited to get my big rank going but don't want to rush into it! Its a lot of investment to rush it and lose it all!
