New to saltwater questions

I am a new to the saltwater world. I have a 70G in its 4th week of cycling. I have one true percula, 15 astria snails, 15 hermit crabs, and 2 sand sifting starfish...all recommended by my lfs. These guys quickly cleaned up all the diatoms from my tank. My lfs also advised me to turn my lights down to no more than 5 hours a day. I have 2 questions. When do I turn my lights back up? Also, do I need to feed my sand sifting stars now that my tank is cleaned up? I am reading about them starving to death.

I'm fairly new to the saltwater world as well (1 yr), but I can safely say that you shouldn't have anything in your tank.
Do you have Live rock?
what kind of filtration?
How did you start the cycle?
Have you been testing your water? If so,what are the current results?
When did you add the livestock?
You shouldn't have added the star, the fish, crabs, or snails.
Your clean up crew is good for your tank, but there is no algae for them to eat so they will likely die. TYpically you stat w/ a few snails/crabs, then as your tank matures, you add more gradually.
Try returning everything. If the things do live, they probably won't be too happy, and may suffer damage.
The amount of time the tank cycled doesn't mean anything. The way you know it's finished is when you test daily, and you see the ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates go up and then back down to 0. THen your cycle is over. May take a few weeks, may take a few months. All tanks are different.
I'm sorry to say,The LFS ripped you off.
I dont know much bout stars, but sand sifting are pretty hardy, BUT you shouldnt add any stars until the tank is well established. They probably will starve, if not, they'll likely die from poor water quality.
I'm not sure what you can do at this point other than return everything, or HOPE that your tank did actually complete it's cycle.
As for the lights, i THINK you should probably run them normal (12hrs) just to encourage algae growth.
Actually, it's quite possible that you got lucky and your tank did complete a cycle. 1 month may have been enough time.
Do searches on the forum on "nitrogen cycle" and just seach general info. Look at the archives/ FAQ section. You'll find a lot of great stuff. I learned EVERYTHING i know from this site. A lot of ppl had done what you did under the encouragement of the LFS. Luckily for you, you did 1 month into the cycle.
Rule #1- dont trust LFS.
I'm sure other ppl on the forum have better advice than me though. Good luck.

Actually you are probably ok at this point in time with everything except for the sand sifting star. There is not much of a bioload yet in your tank and thusly you are not feeding your tank much not leaving a whole lot in your tank for the star to eat. I am not the expert on stars and will leave it at that. If you added a sufficiant amount of truly live rock you would have likely missed the cycle. Allowing your tank to "cycle" is really more of a stabilization period allowing the beneficial bacteria and other favorables to mature.

I started the cycle with 15lbs of live rock and 70 lbs of dead rock. I have 2& 1/2 inches of live sand. Two days after setting up tank I was advised to buy a true percula (damsels were to aggressive and hard to remove) and 5 hermit crabs. Testing every other day I never saw a nitrogen spike but one morning (three weeks later) I woke up and my tank was covered in brown algae which I latered learned was diatoms. During that time I was running my lights 8-9 hours a day. I was told this was too long and to cut them back to a max of 5hours a day and also to put the cleaning crew in that was mentioned above. They also had me add 4oz of live bacteria to tank. I have yet to see an ammonia spike. My lfs told me not to worry because obviously my tank is cycling because of the algae.

You are probably okay at this point, but your sandsifting star will probably starve. Sandsifting stars need a large mature sand bed to survive, if you can you might try and return the star.
I also would find a different place to receive advice than your LFS, seems they aren't very knowledgeable and don't have your best interests in mind.

Is there no way to feed them myself? I have only read about feeding them shrimp but not usually with very much luck.

Not likely, its not recommended to keep a sandsifting star in anything less than a 125g tank with a mature DSB. So even if you manage to get the star to eat something the chances of keeping the star for more than a few months are slim. It can take several months for stars to starve to death.
Also turning your lights down doesn't prevent algae growth it just delays its occurance, so unless you get the excess nutrients removed before you increase the lighting cycle the algae will start growing again once you increase your light cycle.

I was just saying he might as well leave it on now because he has all the snails/crabs. In the mean time till he does decide to turn teh lights back on, they may die.
That's just how I saw it, i could be wrong.

I agree, I don't see shorting the light cycle as a source of algea control so you might as well leave the lights on and identify the source of nutrients.
