welcome to the boards.
you do not want to run hps bulbs on your tank the are the wrong spectrum if I remember correctly but i am not a lighting expert.
what r you planning on putting if you tank? will it be a fish only, fowlr or reef
depending on what you want to keep depends on the type of lighting you need. if you are planning a reef i would go with either t5 with individual reflectors or metal halides. how big is/will your tank be?
i'm sure somebody will post that can help you more. Again welcome to the boards and ask as many question as you want we are all here to help.

I'm still laughing at this. When I read this on the "new post" section, I was like you have got to be kidding me, I had to see this and chime in. That was funny

dont be sorry. I think its funny he got nailed within two posts. I probably would have missed the pun and tried explaining that HPS lights dont work well with reef set ups. (if him and I hadn't been joking about it at work earlier)

I'm still laughing at this. It may effect the salt level or possibly your alkilinity, it all depends on whether the bulb was made from sodium chloride or sodium carbonate and bi-carbonate.
