quick re-cap: i've been having pH swings from 7.8 to 8.4, also alk has been low. i dosed calcium and alk two days in a row. this morning my readings were:
ammonia, nitrite, nitrate: undetectable
pH: 8.4
ca: 420
dkH: 7
what do you think about my calcium and alk? alk is a bit low, but (depending on tonights pH reading) i dont want to dose it.

leave it be and check it tonight.... from wat ive read on here ur cal is right where it needs to be. I dont even test for alk or cal but ur ph should and prob will drop a little by the end of the night. Ph is lowest right before lights out. I usually check my water either late afternoon time or noon just becuase thats the "stable" time.... imo
I say dont even dose for ph for a couple days just take some readings and write them down if u have to. It should stabilize itself! lol o never mind thought u were dosing for ph!!! mb

OOPSY I know you know but you said it wrong. Yes mid day is the stable time.
PH is highest after lights run all day. It drops at night so lots of people use a light on the refugium with macro algae at night to keep PH steady 24/7
A tiny pinch of reef booster, baking soda or alk booster in the top off water will stablize the PH so at the lowest reading (MORNING) no higer then 8.2 so by the days end it is at or just below 8.4 if you don't do the Macro algae thing.
I don't dose for PH unless it is very low and I need it to be higher and then use the booster like I should in the top off.
