Ok, so I put the cart before the horse and went out a bought a 75 gallon tank. After, I got on this site and was blown away at what I got myself into. As you can see, I need help. I have only run a 20 gallon fresh water tank before. This time I want to do a salt water tank. Any thoughts on filter? Is a 80 gal skimmer sufficient? What about live sand vs. crushed coral?

You could try doing a search on this site and see what you can come up with. I am about to do my own search on LS right now.
This site has been a tremendous help to me, I think it will be to you as well.
Most here are very knowledgable and more than happy to help.
Congrats and good luck with your new tank!
Sorry I couldn't be of much help,
Jessica

Welcome to the board! First, what do you want to do with the tank? Will it be a fish-only tank, or a reef tank? If it's a reef tank, what inverts/corals do you want to keep? Go and get some books and do a lot of reading before you do anything. "Conscientious Marine Aquarist" is a good one, as is "Natural Reef Aquarium". These are good books that explain a lot of the basic how's and why's of what you need to know.
Decide out what kind of tank you want to keep, and take if from there. Figure out what kinds of equipment you need and can afford, lighting, skimmer, pumps, etc. There are lots of knowledgeable people on the board, so as questions as you need to.

I definitely want to take a shot at a reef tank, not sure what types of things I want in it other that community fish. My main concern as i keep looking into things, is start up cost. It is amazing the price differance in things from 1 store to another. I may have to go to 10 stores to get the best deal...uuuggghhhhhh...
