My wife gave me a saltwalter aquarium for Christmas. I had never thought about doing salt water. I was thinking about just fresh water. But my wife said, "It's a lot easier now . . ." I did everything wrong you could possiblly do wrong. I bought crushed coral. The LFS let me buy 9 fish on day 3 of setting up my tank.
After every single one of these fish died, I started researching. I tried a canister and killed a couple more fish. I researched some more and built my own sump/refugium. I finally got the tank to cycle. I now have one fish, two snails and a crab.
Today, I cleaned out all the crushed coral and the sunken Titanic and replace them with LS and LR. I expect that my tank will cycle all over again, but I think it will be a smaller one since I kept my sump/refugium and almost all of my water.
I finally think I am on the right track. Thanks.

Sounds like a rough start!! Was the LR cured?? I would expect a full cycle unless your sump/refuge has something acting as a bio-filtrater.
