Newbie needs an ID

I just got my first SW tank set up. It's a 20-gallon with 18.5 lbs of cured LR in it that I placed last night. I need help IDing some hitchikers. Sorry I don't have a digital camera, but there's no way I could photograph #2 anyway.
1. A greenish-brown, flat, plant-looking thing that waves in the current. It's attatched to my LR via a stalk about 1/8" in diameter. The flat part is about 1" in diameter.
2. I've seen some tiny little critters scurrying around the surface of my LR. They're about 2-3 milimeters long and move REALLY fast. They're silver-colored. I saw the first one about 2 hours after I placed my LR in the tank, but then didn't see another one until this morning. I've seen two today (at the same time...it's not the same one twice).
Nothing else is in the tank yet, except a little hermit crab that came as a hitchiker.
Thanks for any help you might offer.

Thanks for the help on #2. I figured they were an OK thing to have, but I just wanted to be sure.
As for #1, it looks a bit like a tiny oak tree leaf, but seems to be pretty flexible. It waves around a lot in the current. It stads from base to tip about 1.5 inches tall.
I live in a fraternity house, so I'll try to borrow a digital camera later tonight.

One more thing --
Everybody talks about stuff coming out of the live rock on its own. How long does this typically take? The man at the fish store said that the live rock I got "just came out of the curing tank." I guess that could mean a few minutes to a couple of days...but it's got lots of purples and greens on it, so I guess it's pretty "live." He said it looked like really good stuff.
Is there anything I can add to the water to help stuff grow while I'm waiting to put other stuff in there?
How long before I should add a few crabs and other invertebrates?
How can I tell whether the stuff is alive or not? It just looks like lichens...which are barely alive anyway, even if they're healthy.
Sorry for my ignorance, lol.
