I want to start with something simple…something that I can take my time with and get use to. What equipment do I need to get this going? Also how much live sand do I need as a base? And lastly how much live rock? I know this is a lot of questions, but I want to start buying the equipment and price out the sand and rock at the local LFS. I appreciate all the help, advice and time you give me.
Welcome aboard......
First i would say that 10gl is not sufficient to start a saltwater since in the long run you will want to add more livestock in there. 10gl would be more to a experient person with SW since there will be more maintanence on taking care of the little tank. But is no impossible to start and learn.
First you would get around 20lbs of LR and 10 to 15 lbs of LS (all depends how you deep you want your sand bed to be. And also you need to have pre mix RO/DI water with salt.
You can have a good HOB filter to use on your 10gl, heater PH, lights, and (if you need a skimmer)
If you will be getting fish only you don't need some expensive lighting, you can buy some PC light and start with that, but if you want some nice corals on the long run, buy some good lighting such as MH, but IMO is notworthy since you may upgrade later to a bigger tank.
When starting this hobby always have patience and always cycle your fish tank before adding anything.
Good Luck
