I just set up a 55 gal about 2 half weeks ago, and I used CC. Is there anyone out there that can tell me if there is anything positive about using CC?

I have heard it will give off a greenish tent color to your tank, while my tank has been cycling I have stirred it occasionally also. I used 4 coctail shrimp to get the cycle going, and after I took those out it was pretty ripe. I have also been using some BIOZOME, I figured that would speed things up a little also, but I have no problem setting back and waiting.

In addition to increase in maintenance (vacuuming, water changes etc.), there are a couple of other points regarding CC vs. sand.
An Aragonite sand bed will help buffer your water better (increased surface area)
Critters thrive in sand beds that will not live in CC.
Many fish and inverts require a sand bed over CC.
It's definitely not the end of the world, but just starting off a tank, a properly set up sand bed would certainly be my reccomendation.

so I have to ask ..anyone that can answer, and I asked this in another post but I'm a bit confused..
I just set up a 55 gallon tank... I'm SO new to this... I have a friend that is helping me out.. but anyway ... I went to the fish store..they gave me arogonite live sand.. and a bag of crushed coral, but its just like the sand, it doesnt look any different, its not big like the crushed coral i just saw in that picture of the other tank...
we set the tank up last night and then my husband went back to the same store.. to get some live rock.. which he came home with today.. he also brought home four crabs, and 5 snails.... now I think this was so stupid of him.. are they going to be okay??? the guy at the store told him that they would be just fine, that they would eat out of the livesand, and that they would eat off the rock we put in there... is that true?? i'm so confused... i'm doing more research but everything i read ... seems to be different and say exactly the opposite of the thing that I have read before.. any one want to help?

There's a good chance they won't live through the cycle... Do a search for "cycling". It will tell ya more.
I'd take them back. I'd also recommend a good book like Fenner's "A Conscientious Marine Aquarist". That way you won't have to rely on the pet store.
Good luck!
