Niger agressiveness

Lately I've been having a little trouble with Nigel, my niger trigger. He's being pretty... well, pretty nasty. He doesn't mess with the humu and in fact he's sort of afraid of him. But all other fish, he gets in these moods where he chases away any fish that gets close. Right now he's about 4" and hasn't done any damage. But I'm afraid as he gets bigger, he CAN do some serious damage. Should I look for a new home for him or hope he's attitude improves? (yeah right...

I was thinking the same thing. Get him out while my other fish are still in one piece.

How bad is he? WHat is he doing?
I viewed my first one as more of a "troublemaker" than an outright "aggressor". He just liked to stir the pot a little and keep everybody on their toes.
Your stock list is quite active and bold, I tend to worry about fish that stay in one area with Nigers (like the Maroon Clown mine abused). Your Powder Blue, Queen, and Huma can certainly take care of themselves and then some, and the Fox and Wrasse are highly active too.
A Niger's color gets more beautiful with age, they also develop their visible red teeth. They are very personable and entertaining fish to watch IMO. I wouldn't get rid of him unless he is really stressing the other fish.

Well, he hasn't outright attacked any fish, other than the clowns which are now in another tank. What he does is if there's a fish in his way, he chases it off but doesn't actually pursue or attack. He hasn't bitten any of the other fish in the tank. The other fish just have to be on their toes so to speak.

Yea, I decided to keep him. When I got him, he was half the size he is now and I've grown attached to the little guy. Even my wife likes him.

Good choice, I think they are great fish, and like I said, you have a well thought out stock list of fish that are all bold and active but not
outright killers (the Niger included)...I think things well be fine.

Definatley keep the niger trigger they are awesome!! I have a niger and a huma as well and they are both around the same size 3" and they get along great as well with my porc puffer! My Niger also seems a lil scared of my crazy huma only when they are eating

your fish are bold, but they are not killers, they tend to do this from time to time to establish a pecking order. Unless injuries are being caused or any one fish is getting the brunt of the aggression and being seriously stressed I think you should be fine.

If your profile is correct and you have these 3 fish in a 55; I'm afraid you're in for a some serious bloodshed down the road; IMO. When grown, I don't think a 55 is big enough for even one of these fish, much less all three. None of them stay the cute, friendly little guys you see at the lfs.

I fully agree with this . Your going to need an upgrade to at least a 125 . those 3 fish in a 55 is going to be bad juju in no time at all .

Damn, Nigel (my niger) is in a foul mood today. He's chasing away any fish that comes close to the algae clip. I can't wait until the Queen Angel grows bigger and kicks his ass. Just like I really enjoy it when the Humu gets annoyed with Nigel and gives him a good whack. Seriously, I'm not being mean to the fish but he deserves the occasional ass kicking he gets from the Humu.

My first was antagonistic as well, never blatantly a killer other than with the Maroon, but always antagonizing everybody except my Achilles (antagonistic, not stupid though). He would even come up and smack my big Porky Puffers tail, poor puffer would turn around and he was gone.
I wouldn't count on your Queen ever surpassing Nigel though. They will grow at the same rate, and Nigel will get big nasty red teeth to go with his nasty attitude.

Yeah, I don't think mine is a killer either, just antagonistic. Especially the algae clip thing. It's not like he eats a lot of it, takes a few bites and that's it. But he has to guard the thing so no other fish gets near. Then I decided to put 2 algae clips at each end of the tank. He manages to guard both!!! Rushes back and forth between the two whenever a fish gets near them.
This is only some days. Other days he doesn't care about the algae clips and doesn't bother any fish at all.
