Im watching a Niger Trigger Juvenile (2-3 inches) at Zoos Pets. Id like to buy him, but he has a white speck on his back and another on his side. I dont want to buy him until I can identify this. I dont think its ick since theres only 2 spots. Sales guy said it may start with an L but he couldnt remember.
Any ideas?

Chris:
So can you describe the spots? large and lumpy small flat cottny looking, rough looking? Are they on the actual fins or body?
Just two of them? for real?
Did he call the problem lympho or lymphocystis?

He didnt have a name, he just thought it may start with L (real helpful, right?)
They were small and at first I thought they might be air bubbles. Just small flat salt-stain looking specks. a-symetrical, but basically round. Im going to go take another look at him on friday. If it doesnt look bad, maybe ill grab him.
How common is it to see a juv. niger trigger in a LFS? Dont want to miss the boat.

Chris;
I suspect he was trying to say lymphocystis or lympho. Please do take another look and if there is MORE than those two spots, its most likely ich, and not lympho. Also ensure that the fish is eating, has clear eyes and fins, is swimming fine and not labored.
AS far as freqeuncy of baby nigers. Baby fish in general appear more frequently in the spring time. Nigers are a very common fish, and you should be these fish almost weekly. It will depend of course on the quality of the LFS.
good luck

HI THERE, I READ AND LEARNED FROM THIS WEBSITE, THAT "SALT LOOKING STAINS" ARE POSSIBLY A SIGN OF "ICH" I HAD ONE OF MY, OR THE ONLY BLUE TANG DEVELOP SALT LOOKING STAINS ON THE OUTSIDE OF HIS BODDY, WHEN I TREATED THE TANK WITH "COPPER"N 3 DAYS MY FISH WAS ALL BETTER...DON'T GRAB ANYTHING THAT DOESN'T LOOK PERFECT..YOU HAVE A DOUBT, THIS IS TELLING YOU SOMETHING....FISH STORES LET YOU BUY ALMOST ANYTHING, SICH OR NOT...I'VE LEARNED TO INVEST IN GOOD HEALTHY FISH BECAUSE ALL OF THESE FISH GET SOME KIND OF VIRUS OR ANOTHER...ASK MORE OF US, GOOD LUCK!!! I wouldn't risk buying this fish because as Frank says they are fairly common and as Patty said you already have doubts. I don't know exactly what this fish has but it has "something" and in my (limited) experience I can tell you that 2 spots can be ich! <img src="graemlins//eek.gif" border="0" alt="[eek]" />
