Niger

I'm looking for a new fish to put in my 40 gallon fish-only tank and I was thinking about putting a trigger in there. I presently have (2) 3 stripe damsels and I've heard that the Niger is a very hardy fish. I want to keep my tank on the community side only because i don't want a total warzone in the future. Are there any other triggers or other fish that i might want to put in?

Yes, Niger Triggerfish are really nice. Mine was added first and is the nicest one in there. But if you add your Niger you would hafe to upgrade, because niger triggerfish get pretty big.

well i sold mine today, man did i hate him, he was the meanest fish when he was 3 inches he picked on a 4 inch undulated, just my opinion make sure your getting a nice one, put ur finge rin the water and see if he goes after it, mine alwayts did.

dlight yours must of been real mean! I also know my friend has a niger(biggest one in the tank by 2 in.) and does not harm one fish in there.Dlight is right, try her method.

The niger is not a nice trigger. However it does have a greater likelyhood of getting along with the others than MOST triggers. Of course the pint tail is more community oriented then a niger. I've never seen a mean pink tail. To answer: yes there are nigers that get along fine with community fish but I know for a fact that many get meaner as they grow larger and get those Nice Large Red Teeth on'em. It's a chance you take when buying a niger. Besides, the niger would eventually outgrow your tank and if you're looking to keep it on the community side go with a community fish or at least an agressive family that is not quite aggressive as the triggers (like a fu-man chu lionfish or something small) HTH and good luck.

OH WOW, A mean Niger Trigger, I would never have thought they could be so mean, ours is a big pussycat fish. He dosen't hurt or bother anyone or anything. We had an Undulated Trigger now he was a real meany! The very first day he was in our tank he ate my Royal Grammy,(he wasn't even in there more than 15 minute) I was soo mad!
But then I got thinking well maybe he hasn't been feed in a while, so I gave him a break...When all our crabs & snails came up missing, he went back to the lfs. We had know idea they we're like that. We we're new to the hobby, we should have done some reading on them, but you would have thought the owner of the lfs would have told us not to buy it....OH Well, lesson learned....Lisa

I have had 3 Nigers over the last year or so. Two got sick and passed on. The one I have had now for awhile is a baby and is in with a baby coral hogfish for now till they grow a bit. One of the first 2 was about 5 inches and altho not mean they tend to move around a lot which can cause slower moving fish some concern. My lfs had a larger one he sold and got back twice as it was a mean sucker. So I agree like people they can turn fast sometimes.

sorry dlight, but there are mean nigers and nice ones. They are usualy nice but sometimes you come accross some mean ones. I saw once in a fis hstore in a small tank a big naso tang, a little flame angel and a bigger undulated(no clue why). And the flame was with the undulated in a little tunnel, and the undulated wouldn't attack it. Wonder why.

I have had one for a year and although he doesnt take any crap from the other fish, I'd say he was pretty tame. I have a tomato clown that is more agressive the the niger.
