night light...

we have lost a blue-dot jawfish, yellowhead jawfish, powder blue tang, flame angel, and almost a lawnmower blenny.... i think the secret for my 29 reef and my bro's 10 reef is the night light... both of the previous tanks have actinics at night.. all the fishes seem to be okay when the lights are off but for the 55 FOWLR, once the light goes off, all the fishes becomes frantic, jumping (jawfishes) around and the next day, you'll see them on the carpet surfing or with ick (flame and PB); and after an hour or so, the ick goes away and the same routine happens til they slowly die .. i will be getting 2 18" actinic to stay on all the time and will keep my tank from new inhabitants for atleast 2 months to rid the ick...
this is just an observation.. i wonder if this it true? what do you guys think?

I really don't understand what you are trying to say. Are you saying you need a light on the tank 24/7 or the fish freak?
By what I'm reading here, and perhaps I'm missing something, it sounds like some sort of reverse grounding problem. The fish start jumping out of the tank when the lights go out? hmmm.....

Are you saying that you keep/kept a PB Tang in a 55 (or worse, in a 29)???
There's the problem right there.
PB's need to swim! I wouldn't even attempt to keep one in my 90! PB's are the whole reason I got into this hobby.. but I can't keep one since my tank isn't large enough.
Maybe overstocking is the issue here.

yes, the PB needs a lot of room but i was hoping to keep him on the 55FOWLR for 6 months until i'm ready to get a 180 but unfortunately he died i also got him for $25.. i got him really small 1 1/2"...
anyway, about the lighting.. i think that it's better to have some kind of lighting at night rather than nothing at all... the tank is in our finished basement... at night when the lights are off, it's completely dark... i was just saying that maybe the fishes are more secure seeing some kind of light and they would feel better knowing where they're going around the tank...

Fish do not need lighting at night. Many of them sleep at this time, and others are perfectly capable of going about their buisness at night. My tank is completely dark at night, two of my fish sleep, and my eel is out swimming. The lights aren't the problem with the fish dieing. Bo
