You want to shoot for 0.
Although 20-40 is ok for a "short period" After a while with nitrates high, the fish will get stressed, and get some type of gill/breathing problem.
(Sorry I forgot the name of it):notsure:

I have had some nitrate problems and there a couple of routine things that you need to do to keep them as low as possible:
1) stay up on your water changes
2) do not overfeed... your fish may seem like they are hungry 5 minutes after you feed them but it is very important not to overfeed them!!! One feeding every day or 2 is fine.
3) Try and have a powerhead shoot across the substrate, aimed at your live rock to prevent as much food and crap from getting caught under it.
4) Change filter Media regularly.
5) And since your new, take your time do not push the biolad to its max right away, add your fish gradually
6) Good luck!!
