Hey Gang,
Besides partial water change, is there any system that will help reduce nitrate build up? I have read some books saying Plenum System??? Any comments will be greatly appreciated...

I'VE HEARD THAT PLENUMS DO HELP REDUCE NITRATES, BUT I'VE ALSO HEARD THAT THEY CAN CRASH. THERE ARE DENITRAFIERS ON THE MARKET THAT ARE SUPOSE TO WORK WELL AND ARE REASONABLY PRICED. THAT REMINDS ME, WHEN IS THIS SITE GOING TO START SELLING DRY GOODS, THAT COMING SOON SIGN IS MAKING ME SEA SICK.

Supposedly there is a filtration system[nitrafier] that not only eats nitrates, but it also allows you to not do water changes anymore. I hit the website that sold that resently, but don't remember what it was. Probably if you brouse for nitrafying systems, or look up nitrate control on About.com, you can find what I'm talking about....it didsn't look like the easyest thing to setup, but if you're going with a new setup, I'd probably give it serious consideration.
Additionally, there is some new "natural" work being done where a separate "sump" is setup, but instead of equiptment you put in sump you grow macro algae and mangroves. These plants eat the nitrate. Basically, though, you are managing 2 systems then...your aquarium with fish, reef, and your aquarium [usually under tank] with plantlife....both requiring care and attention [not to mention $$$$ to maintain].

I just purchased a product called Acquarmarine Nitrate Reducer from "that pet place" for $10.95. The bottle treats 900 gallons. I have yet to use it because I'm going to do a water change tomorrow. I'll try and let you know of any results good or bad.

Beth,
I have read something about the method you mentioned. It called "Eco-System". Would a Plenum System work?
